Day 53-1: +$56.50 (+14 BB at $2/4)

Level: +$56.50 in 2.23 table hours (+14 BB at $2/4)
Overall: +$365.65 in 111.93 table hours

If I keep playing like this, I'll never get out of $2/4. Why do I say this if I'm up today? I'm making very bad turn/river calls because something inside my head tells me they're bluffing far more often than they are. I'm not going to post hands today.

Stats: $1/2 (2/24/2007)

In a quick run, I've won enough to step back up to $2/4. I tried overlimping more, and the stats suggest that I'm actually getting looser. It's 27/19/2.3 this time compared to 22/15/3.0 the previous time I was at $1/2. But these stats are over fairly short periods, and the variance has probably not been very well shaken out yet.

Just for fun, I looked at some of my stats
  • Limping with previous callers: 77 hands, +$4.00
  • Any raise: 290 hands, +$356.25
  • Raised first in: 210 hands, +$171.75
  • Raised after a previous caller/raiser: 80 hands, +$184.50
What does it all mean? I don't know. I wish I could isolate my preflop 3-bets/caps from the rest of the raises, but I don't see how this could be done.

It's also fun to look at stats based on the number of players to the flop:
  • Heads up: 649 hands, 26.8/24.0, +$87.75
  • 3 Handed: 435 hands, 27.6/17.2, +$34.00
  • 4+ Handed: 202 hands, 46.5/14.9, +$98.25
This seems to indicate that most hands are played heads up on the flop... I've never really stopped to think about it, but it makes plenty of sense to me. Taking a closer look at the numbers, including only hands where I put money in or saw the flop for free...
  • Heads up: 206 hands, 84.5/75.7, +$174.25
  • 3 Handed: 163 hands, 73.6/46.0, +$70.00
  • 4+ Handed: 135 hands, 69.6/22.2, $106.00
Now of course, the VPIP isn't 100% because these hands include hands from the BB which are obviously not counted as VPIP. I'm actually more curious about my raising hands (any raise):
  • Heads up: 156 hands, +$146.00
  • 3 Handed: 75 hands, +$40.50
  • 4+ Handed: 30 hands, +$130.75
I'm impressed by how much I make in these multiway pots. What does this tell me? I'm not sure, but I think it means I'm getting tons of action with monster hands.

Anyway, it's now time for the picture show:

Day 52-8: +$27.25 (+14 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$213.25 in 15.85 table hours (+107 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$320.15 in 110.17 table hours

A quick hour-long session took care of the last bit to clear this level again. I look forward to beating $2/4 this time by playing well and not getting hit with the variance stick.

Hand 1: I knew that the river card was bad...

Preflop: Hero is MP with Ad, 9d.
UTG calls, Hero raises, 3 folds, BB calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) Kc, Ac, Qc (3 players)
BB bets, UTG folds, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) 9h (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

River: (8.25 BB) Jd (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

Results:
BB has Js Ah (two pair, aces and jacks).
Hero has Ad 9d (two pair, aces and nines).

Hand 2: Against this villain, I might have even been able to squeeze off a river value bet, though it would be incredibly thin.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7h, Ad.
4 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) Jd, 7s, Ks (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3 BB) Kc (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

River: (5 BB) 5c (2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks.

Results:
Hero has 7h Ad (two pair, kings and sevens).
BB has As 6h (one pair, kings).

Hand 3: PAHUD stats clued me into villain's preflop looseness and overall aggression level. That made this an easy calldown after the turn check-raise. He wasn't a maniac, but he had a high enough level of aggression that I felt he could be betting a pocket pair.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Qh, Ks.
1 fold, Hero raises, 3 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 4s, Qd, 4c (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3.25 BB) 7c (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (7.25 BB) 6c (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
BB has Tc Ts (two pair, tens and fours).
Hero has Qh Ks (two pair, queens and fours).

Hand 4: Here's a rare coldcall in 6-max. I was encouraged by the fact that UTG was a bit weak postflop and that the coldcaller was really bad.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Ks, Js.
UTG raises, MP calls, Hero calls, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (10 SB) 7d, Kd, 8s (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, MP checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds, UTG folds, MP folds.

Turn: (6 BB) 8c (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

River: (8 BB) Kc (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB folds.

I'll post stats later (as usual).

Day 51-7: +$28.25 (+14 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$186.00 in 13.89 table hours (+93 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$292.90 in 108.20 table hours

Almost there... I don't really have any comments, so I'll just post a couple hands.

Hand 1: I was very confused with his action. It turns out that he's just an idiot.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Ad, Jd.
UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, 3 folds, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Flop: (9.50 SB) 4s, As, 7c (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero calls.

Turn: (6.75 BB) 4d (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks.

River: (6.75 BB) Td (2 players)
UTG bets, Hero calls.

Results:
UTG has Kd Qd (one pair, fours).
Hero has Ad Jd (two pair, aces and fours).

Hand 2: Villain's line makes absolutely no sense to me. He should have either bet the river or just called the 3-bet.

Preflop: Hero is BB with 5d, Ad.
UTG raises, 2 folds, Hero calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 5s, 7s, Qd (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks.

Turn: (2.25 BB) Ac (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG caps, Hero calls.

River: (10.25 BB) 8d (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks.

Results:
Hero has 5d Ad (two pair, aces and fives).
UTG has Ah Th (one pair, aces).

Hand 3: I struggle with these sorts of turn decisions. When he just called the flop bet, I figured he was likely on overcards. If that is true, then improving to my king is generally bad because a bet won't get called by a worse hand, but better hands may check-raise (and I don't like folding top pair HU). So I checked behind and was prepared to call a river bet.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Td, Kd.
1 fold, MP raises, Hero 3-bets, 2 folds, MP calls.

Flop: (7.50 SB) Jd, 7c, 6s (2 players)
MP checks, Button bets, MP calls.

Turn: (4.75 BB) Ks (2 players)
MP checks, Hero checks.

River: (4.75 BB) Qd (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets, MP calls.

Results:
MP has 9h 9s (one pair, nines).
Hero has Td Kd (one pair, kings).

Hand 4: I probably should have raised the turn here since it was called and not raised in front of me. I still don't feel comfortable pushing edges like that. Here's one of those spots where I'm overlimping a hand that I might otherwise have folded.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Td, Qh.
UTG calls, 1 fold, Hero calls, 1 fold, BB raises, UTG calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) 8s, 8c, Qs (3 players)
BB bets, UTG calls, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.75 BB) Th (3 players)
BB bets, UTG calls, Hero calls.

River: (7.75 BB) 5c (3 players)
BB checks, UTG bets, Hero calls, BB folds.

Results:
UTG has 9c 7s (one pair, eights).
Hero has Td Qh (two pair, queens and tens).

Hand 5: Here's an odd one. I didn't bet the flop because I had been betting a number of flops and was probably on the verge of getting "too much" action from the other players. So I was content to check-fold this if someone else wanted to pick it up. But then it got checked through. I improved, but the board improved even more. I figured it too likely for one other player to have a heart, so I just check-folded my straight. Turns out I was wrong, but that's okay with me.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 7d, 6d.
2 folds, CO calls, 1 fold, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (3 SB) 4h, Ah, 3h (3 players)
Hero checks, BB checks, CO checks.

Turn: (1.50 BB) 5h (3 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, CO calls, Hero folds.

River: (3.50 BB) 9d (2 players)
BB bets, CO calls.

Results:
BB has 8s Ks (high card, ace).
CO has Ac Ts (one pair, aces).

Level: +$157.75 in 11.92 table hours (+79 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$264.65 in 106.23 table hours

This session was cut short because I jumped into a HORSE donkament. I'll post more later... tomorrow is a holiday.

Day 49-5: +$53.25 (+27 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$145.50 in 10.75 table hours (+73 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$252.40 in 105.07 table hours

I went back to two tables for the first time in a while. Everything went along relatively nicely, but (as always) there were still a couple bad calldowns. I seem to be doing this at least once every 100 hands. That could be hurting me as much as 1 BB/100! If it really is this bad, then it's a substantial leak.

Hand 1: I'm surprised I got paid off on the river check-raise by this hand. I thought about donking the river, but villain was aggro enough to keep betting, but not aggro enough to raise.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Jc, Ad.
1 fold, Hero raises, CO 3-bets, 3 folds, Hero calls.

Flop: (7.50 SB) Kc, 3s, Ac (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.75 BB) 5s (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero calls.

River: (6.75 BB) Js (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero raises, CO calls.

Results:
Hero has Jc Ad (two pair, aces and jacks).
CO has Qs Kh (one pair, kings).

Hand 2: I usually wonder if I should raise in these spots on the turn or river, but I can never seem to bring myself to do it.
Preflop: Hero is CO with Jh, Ac.
1 fold, MP calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls, MP calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) 8d, 8c, 7c (3 players)

Results:
MP has Kc 7s (two pair, eights and sevens).

Hand 3: Bet the turn...

BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3.75 BB) Th (2 players)

Hero has Ah 6h (two pair, tens and sixes).

Hand 4: Pots like this make me smile.

Preflop: Hero is SB with Kh, Kd.

Flop: (12 SB) 3h, 8c, Kc (4 players)

Results:
Hero has Kh Kd (three of a kind, kings).
BB has 9c Ac (high card, ace).
UTG has Ks Qh (one pair, kings).

Hand 5: More value lost to on the river card.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Kc, Ks. CO posts a blind of $1.
UTG calls, 1 fold, CO (poster) raises, Hero 3-bets, 2 folds, UTG calls, CO calls.

Flop: (10.50 SB) 6s, 7d, Jh (3 players)
UTG checks, CO checks, Hero bets, UTG raises, CO 3-bets, Hero caps, UTG calls, CO calls.

Turn: (10.25 BB) 5s (3 players)
UTG checks, CO checks, Hero bets, UTG calls, CO calls.

River: (13.25 BB) Ad (3 players)
UTG checks, CO checks, Hero checks.

Results:
UTG has Jd 3c (one pair, jacks).
CO has Ah Jc (two pair, aces and jacks).
Hero has Kc Ks (one pair, kings).

Hand 6: Villain was an aggro-bluffer. I decided that I didn't want to face a flop check-raise (which was almost certainly coming), so I checked behind and called the double bluff. I like showing down K-high and winning.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Kc, Jd.
1 fold, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 2c, 7s, 3s (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

Results:
SB has Ah Qh (straight, ace high).
Hero has 8c Kc (flush, king high).

Day 48-4: +$79.00 (+40 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$92.25 in 7.55 table hours (+46 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$199.15 in 101.87 table hours

I played a very very long session today (4 hours). But I wasn't really paying that much attention. Most of my energy was being devoted towards looking up housing information for Henderson, NV, which is where I will be moving in a few months after I finish my Ph.D. in math. In the meantime, the autopilot was on and the hands were good, so it was easy to make money.

Hands 1 and 2: I have trouble folding aces. The first hand is a more reasonable calldown simply because the flop check-raise is much less likely a queen than if there were a turn check-raise. The second hand is one of those spots where I just call down and not like it.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Ad, Ah.
UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, 2 folds, BB calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (9.50 SB) 9c, Qh, Qs (3 players)
BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, BB raises, UTG folds, Hero calls.

Turn: (6.75 BB) 6c (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

River: (8.75 BB) 4s (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
BB has Qc 3c (three of a kind, queens).
Hero has Ad Ah (two pair, aces and queens).

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Ad, Ac.
UTGA raises, 1 fold, CO calls, 2 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) Th, 7c, 8c (3 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, CO folds, BB calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) 8h (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (8.25 BB) 3d (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.
Results:
BB has 8s Jc (three of a kind, eights).
Hero has Ad Ac (two pair, aces and eights).

Hand 3: I'm really not sure about this one. Villain didn't seem overly loose or aggressive, which made me very unsure about calling down with three broadway on the board. But I did anyway.

Preflop: Hero is MP with As, Kc.
1 fold, MP raises, 1 fold, Button calls, 2 folds.

Flop: (5.50 SB) 6s, Qs, Jc (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

Turn: (3.75 BB) Ac (2 players)

Hero bets, Button raises, Hero calls.

River: (7.75 BB) 5d (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has As Kc (one pair, aces).
Button has Ah Jh (two pair, aces and jacks).

Hand 4: I found this spot to be very interesting. The first raiser has been raising very often and playing very aggressively postflop. The second raiser has 3-bet the first raiser a couple times, but I didn't see any of those hands shown down, so I don't know what he's raising with. So I decided to cap and take it from there. On the turn, I was a bit lost. I'm pretty sure I don't have the best hand. I'm mostly concerned with the 3-bettor's hand being something like AK or 88, which will both call my bet. The first caller could have peeled with all sorts of hands, so his hand range is wider. On the river, I felt I could call a bet from the first raiser (he could put us on overcards and make an aggro-bluff at it), but not overcall (because the second raiser isn't going to call with worse than AQ).

Preflop: Hero is Button with As, Qh.
1 fold, MP raises, CO 3-bets, Button caps, 2 folds, MP calls, CO calls.

Flop: (13.50 SB) 4h, 7s, 2h (3 players)
MP checks, CO checks, Button bets, MP calls, CO calls.

Turn: (8.25 BB) 2d (3 players)
MP checks, CO checks, Hero checks.

River: (8.25 BB) 3d (3 players)
MP bets, CO folds, Hero calls.

Results:
MP has 9h 9d (two pair, nines and twos).
Hero has As Qh (one pair, twos).

Hand 5: It's another lousy turn card.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Ah, Tc.
UTG calls, Hero raises, 2 folds, SB calls, BB calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (8 SB) 3c, Ac, Td (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB folds, BB calls, UTG folds.

Turn: (5 BB) 8c (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (9 BB) 2h (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
BB has 6c 4c (flush, ace high).
Hero has Ah Tc (two pair, aces and tens).

Hand 6: A turn screw-play is a beautiful thing. It's even more beautiful when it confuses villain enough to make him look you up.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with As, Td.
Hero raises, 2 folds, Button calls, 2 folds.

Flop: (5.50 SB) 4s, 8d, Kc (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

Turn: (3.75 BB) Ad (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero raises, Button calls.

River: (7.75 BB) Jd (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

Results:
Hero has As Td (one pair, aces).
Button has Qc 8c (one pair, eights).

Hand 7: Value bet the river? It's close. Both players are loose/passive and can be calling down with worse hands. However, they can also be calling down with a better hand (weak Kx) and the flush draw just came in. I like value betting the turn because the gutshot and the flush draws are still chasing. I think I could have gotten away with a river bet here.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Ac, Th.
1 fold, MP calls, 2 folds, SB completes, Hero raises, MP calls, SB calls.

Flop: (6 SB) Ks, Tc, 9s (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, MP calls, SB calls.

Turn: (4.50 BB) 4c (3 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, MP calls, SB calls.

River: (7.50 BB) 2s (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, MP checks.

Results:
SB has 9h Jc (one pair, nines).
Hero has Ac Th (one pair, tens).
MP has As 9c (one pair, nines).

Hand 8: Villain had donked into a turn scare card a couple times before. In each of those other hands, I had no pair and couldn't call down. But now that I had a pair and a flush draw, I can easily call the turn donk and get away with a river call on the suspiciously strange play.

Preflop: Hero is Button with 8c, Ac.
UTG calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, SB calls, BB calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (8 SB) 9s, 5c, Tc (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB folds, BB calls, UTG calls.

Turn: (5.50 BB) 8s (3 players)
BB checks, UTG bets, Hero calls, BB folds.

River: (7.50 BB) Ks (2 players)
UTG bets, Hero calls.

Results:
UTG has 5h 6d (one pair, fives).
Hero has 8c Ac (one pair, eights).

Hand 9: No preflop raise? The player behind me was playing too loosely preflop for me to raise to isolate the limper and too loosely postflop to allow me to steal it away. So I limped and looked to play postflop poker. Sadly, the turn did me in again. This calldown is better because some players are more apt to wait until the turn with medium top pairs since they want to see a "safe" turn card before putting in extra bets.

Preflop: Hero is CO with Ad, 7h. MP posts a blind of $1.
1 fold, MP (poster) checks, Hero calls, Button calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (5 SB) 7s, 2c, 4d (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero bets, Button folds, SB folds, BB folds, MP calls.

Turn: (3.50 BB) 2s (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets, MP raises, Hero calls.

River: (7.50 BB) Ts (2 players)
MP bets, Hero calls.

Results:
MP has 2d As (three of a kind, twos).
Hero has Ad 7h (two pair, sevens and twos).

Hand 10: Strange thing about bad aggro villains. They love to bet weak hands on the river as bluffs, but they don't know how to value bet. I called him down because he had been caught betting/raising with junk a couple times already. As this was a blind-steal situation, it's even more likely for him to play back with a weak hand.

Preflop: Hero is SB with Ks, Kh.
4 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) 3h, Qs, Ac (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

Turn: (4 BB) 8c (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero calls.

River: (6 BB) 6c (2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks.

Results:
Hero has Ks Kh (one pair, kings).
BB has 4d Ad (one pair, aces).

Hand 11: The classic 72o bluff. Big egos and small bankrolls.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Ks, 8d.
2 folds, CO calls, Hero calls, 1 fold, BB raises, CO calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) Ah, Kd, Jc (3 players)

Turn: (4.25 BB) Js (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

River: (6.25 BB) Qh (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
BB has 2h 7d (one pair, jacks).
Hero has Ks 8d (two pair, kings and jacks).

Hand 12: My turn to suck out on the river.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 3d, Kd.
3 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) 5c, 7s, 2d (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3 BB) Qd (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (7 BB) Td (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

Results:
Hero has 3d Kd (flush, king high).
BB has 5s 5h (three of a kind, fives).

Hand 13: This was a scary river that turned out well for me. I usually bet this, but I hate to bet-fold my set and I don't want to see the showdown for two bets, so I took the cheaper route.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Ts, Tc.
UTG calls, MP calls, 1 fold, Button calls, 1 fold, Hero raises, UTG calls, MP calls, Button calls.

Flop: (8.50 SB) Kd, 5d, Td (4 players)
Hero bets, UTG calls, MP folds, Button raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG folds, Button caps, Hero calls.

Turn: (8.75 BB) 2h (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

River: (10.75 BB) 9d (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has Ts Tc (three of a kind, tens).
Button has 5h 5c (three of a kind, fives).

Hand 14: Flopped sets are nice. Rivered quads are better.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 4d, 4s.
Hero raises, MP calls, 1 fold, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) Ks, 4c, 2s (4 players)
SB bets, BB folds, Hero raises, MP calls, SB calls.

Turn: (7 BB) 3c (3 players)

SB bets, Hero raises, MP calls, SB 3-bets, Hero caps, MP calls, SB calls.

SB bets $0.5 (All-In), Hero raises, MP folds.

Results:

Hero has 4d 4s (four of a kind, fours).

Day 47-3: -$13.75 (-7 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$13.25 in 3.50 table hours (+7 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$120.15 in 97.82 table hours

I actually played this session a while ago, but didn't have the time to post anything.

Hand 1: I sucked out on this hand. I should just call the turn bet because the one card flush draw is a little too weak and he never folds a better hand.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Ad, Th.
2 folds, Hero raises, SB calls, BB 3-bets, Hero calls, SB calls.

Flop: (9 SB) 2h, Ah, 7h (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets, Hero calls, SB calls.

Turn: (6 BB) Jd (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets, Heroraises, SB folds, BB calls.

River: (10 BB) Kh (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

Results:
BB has Kd Ac (two pair, aces and kings).
Hero has Ad Th (flush, ace high).

Hand 2: I don't know if there's really much you can do against the free showdown raise when you have a medium-strength hand OOP.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 4c, Ah.
3 folds, Hero raises, BB calls.

Flop: (4 SB) Ad, 5c, 3c (2 players)
Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3 BB) 9h (2 players)
Hero bets, BB raises, Hero calls.

River: (7 BB) Js (2 players)
Hero checks, BB checks.

Results:
BB has 4d 9s (one pair, nines).
Hero has 4c Ah (one pair, aces).

Hand 3: I considered check-raising the turn, but decided that I wanted to get to cheaply showdown instead of trying to squeeze marginal value out of a marginal hand.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 3s, Ad.
3 folds, Hero raises, BB 3-bets, Hero calls.

Flop: (6 SB) 8c, 5s, 3h (2 players)

Hero checks, BB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
BB has Ah Ks (one pair, eights).
Hero has 3s Ad (two pair, eights and threes).

Hand 4: Every now and then...

Preflop: Hero is SB with Kc, Kh.
UTG raises, 3 folds, Hero 3-bets, 1 fold, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Flop: (9 SB) 9d, 9s, 6h (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero 3-bets, UTG caps, Hero calls.

Turn: (8.50 BB) 7s (2 players)
Hero bets, UTG raises, Hero calls.

River: (12.50 BB) 7c (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has Kc Kh (two pair, kings and nines).
UTG has As Ac (two pair, aces and nines).

Hand 5: I didn't know what to make of his river donk here. His river bet is awful unless he's able to fold to a raise. My flop call is a little loose with the flush draw on the board, but I think it's tolerable.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Qc, Kd.
Hero raises, 1 fold, CO calls, 1 fold, SB 3-bets, 1 fold, Hero calls, CO calls.

Flop: (10 SB) 4h, Th, Ad (3 players)
SB bets, Hero calls, CO calls.

Turn: (6.50 BB) Jh (3 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, CO folds, SB calls.

River: (10.50 BB) 3d (2 players)
SB bets, Hero calls.

Results:
SB has Ac Jc (two pair, aces and jacks).
Hero has Qc Kd (straight, ace high).

Hand 6: Turn bluff and river value bet in one hand. The flop is a little loose again, but I still think it's tolerable.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Kh, Th.
1 fold, MP raises, Button calls, 1 fold, BB calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) 2s, 9d, 4d (3 players)
BB bets, Hero calls, Button folds.

Turn: (4.25 BB) As (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

River: (6.25 BB) Tc (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

Results:
BB has 9c 6c (one pair, nines).
Hero has Kh Th (one pair, tens).

Hand 7: This is a hand where I wanted to get to showdown cheaply against a LAG.

Preflop: Hero is SB with 8c, Qd.
UTG calls, 1 fold, CO calls, 1 fold, Hero completes, BB checks.

Flop: (4 SB) Kc, Qc, 5c (4 players)

Turn: (3.50 BB) 6s (3 players)

Hero checks, BB checks, CO bets, Hero calls, BB folds.

Results:
Hero has 8c Qd (two pair, queens and sixes).
CO has 3h Ah (one pair, sixes).

Day 46-2: +$1.50 (+1 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$27.00 in 2.15 table hours (+14 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$133.90 in 96.47 table hours

This was a high variance day. I ran into a very aggressive table and came away only ahead a tiny bit. The cards did not cooperate with me so much. I made a couple bad calls, which is disappointing.

Hand 1: I've played with the betting villain before. My notes say that calling down is best because he has a raise/fold style of play. This means that raising will make him fold worse hands, but he will 3-bet better ones (and a few worse ones, but not enough of them).

Preflop: Hero is Button with 7s, Ad.
3 folds, Hero raises, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (6 SB) Tc, As, 3h (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets, Hero calls, SB calls.

Turn: (4.50 BB) 2c (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets, Hero calls, SB calls.

River: (7.50 BB) Ks (3 players)
SB checks, BB bets, Hero calls, SB folds.

Results:
BB has Td Th (three of a kind, tens).
Hero has 7s Ad (one pair, aces).

Hand 2: Villain was pretty aggressive, close to a maniac. I decided that I was more or less going to show down this hand, so I limped it in to hope to get to showdown somewhat cheaply. This is another spot where I could have check-raised the turn. However, I was very certain he was going to bet the river for me and felt like he would call the river check-raise with a wide wide range of hands (given that he called down a river check-raise before with a low pocket pair).

Preflop: Hero is SB with 5d, Ac.
4 folds, Hero completes, BB raises, Hero calls.

Flop: (4 SB) 9c, Jd, 2s (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (3 BB) Ad (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero calls.

River: (5 BB) 7h (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets, Hero raises, BB folds.

Hand 3: I chose not to c-bet the flop because it was very very likely to get called by both players, if not raised by someone, and I doubt K-high was the best hand. Since I didn't have position, I couldn't even get myself a free card. So I checked to see if I could get to the turn for free. I wasn't sure if I should raise the river. That bet is sometimes a desperation bluff, which means my raise won't get called and the player behind me was very very loose.

Preflop: Hero is CO with Qs, Kc.
1 fold, MP raises, Hero 3-bets, Button calls, 2 folds, MP calls.

Flop: (10.50 SB) 5h, 3s, 4s (3 players)
MP checks, Hero checks, Button checks.

Turn: (5.25 BB) Ts (3 players)
MP checks, Hero checks, Button checks.

River: (5.25 BB) Qd (3 players)
MP bets, Hero calls, Button calls.

Results:
MP has Tc 9c (one pair, tens).
Hero has Qs Kc (one pair, queens).
Button has Kd Th (one pair, tens).

Hand 4: I like getting full value out of my hand. It turns out I had to dodge a number of bullets for me to collect it.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Tc, Kc.
Hero raises, 1 fold, CO 3-bets, Button calls, 2 folds, Hero calls.

Flop: (10.50 SB) Td, 4d, 7c (3 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Button calls, Hero raises, CO calls, Button calls.

Turn: (8.25 BB) 2h (3 players)
Hero bets, CO folds, Button calls.

River: (10.25 BB) 4s (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

Results:
Hero has Tc Kc (two pair, tens and fours).
Button has Qd 7d (two pair, sevens and fours).

Hand 5: This was the river check-raise I referred to above.

Preflop: Hero is CO with Qd, Jd.
2 folds, Hero raises, Button calls, 2 folds.

Flop: (5.50 SB) 6d, Td, As (2 players)
Hero bets, Button raises, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.75 BB) 8h (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero calls.

River: (6.75 BB) 9c (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero raises, Button calls.

Results:
Hero has Qd Jd (straight, queen high).
Button has 5c 5d (one pair, fives).

Hand 6: Here is an overlimp that I might not have done before. I usually have Q9o as my weakest hand, but I'm trying to widen that limping range just a little bit more. Getting no callers at all was a bit of a surprise.

Preflop: Hero is Button with Qd, 8c.
UTG calls, MP calls, CO calls, Hero calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (6 SB) 7d, Qh, Ad (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG checks, MP checks, CO checks, Hero bets, SB folds, BB folds, UTG folds, MP folds, CO folds.

Hand 7: Here's a bad calldown. Even though villain is a complete unknown, I can't be looking him up like this.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Jh, Ts. CO posts a blind of $1.
2 folds, CO (poster) checks, 2 folds, Hero checks.

Flop: (2.50 SB) 9s, 2c, Js (2 players)
Hero bets, CO calls.

Turn: (2.25 BB) Qd (2 players)
Hero bets, CO raises, Hero calls.

River: (6.25 BB) 7c (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has Jh Ts (one pair, jacks).
CO has Td Ks (straight, king high).

Hand 8: Another bad call-down.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Ts, Tc.
UTG calls, 2 folds, Button calls, SB completes, Hero raises, UTG calls, Button calls, SB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) Qc, Qh, 4s (4 players)
SB checks, BB bets, UTG calls, Button calls, SB folds.

Turn: (5.50 BB) 9d (3 players)

Hero bets, UTG raises, Button folds, Hero calls.

River: (9.50 BB) 6d (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has Ts Tc (two pair, queens and tens).
UTG has Ac Ah (two pair, aces and queens).

Hand 9: Here's an interesting river fold. There is a small chance he had AK and I folded the best hand, but I think it's far more likely that he had a hand like AQ/KQ/AA/KK/JJ, all of which beat me.

Preflop: Hero is BB with 9c, Ts.
1 fold, MP raises, 2 folds, SB calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (6 SB) 4c, Qd, 9h (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, MP bets, SB folds, BB raises, MP 3-bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (6 BB) Tc (2 players)
Hero checks, MP bets, Hero raises, MP calls.

River: (10 BB) Qs (2 players)
Hero checks, MP bets, Hero folds.

Hand 10: I might have been able to bet the river and get called.

Preflop: Hero is MP with 7c, 7h.
1 fold, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB 3-bets, Hero calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) 4h, Td, 9s (2 players)
BB bets, Hero calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) 9h (2 players)
BB bets, Hero raises, BB calls.

River: (8.25 BB) 6d (2 players)
BB checks, Hero checks.

Results:
BB has Ah Js (one pair, nines).
Hero has 7c 7h (two pair, nines and sevens).

Hand 11: Villain was very aggro, stealing with almost any two. His flop play was fishy enough that the turn felt like an easy bet-fold.

Preflop: Hero is BB with 6h, 5s.
2 folds, Button raises, 1 fold, Hero calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 5h, 4s, Qc (2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks.

Turn: (2.25 BB) Kc (2 players)
Hero bets, Button raises, Hero folds.

Day 45-1: +$25.50 (+13 BB at $1/2)

Level: +$25.50 in 1.00 table hour (+13 BB at $1/2)
Overall: +$132.40 in 95.32 table hours

I'm making two intentional adjustments to my play. The first is that I'm going to overlimp a little more often. The second is that I'm going to play around with open-limping from UTG if the players behind me are loose. I haven't decided how loose I would want them to be, but I'm thinking two 50+ VPIP players would be sufficient. I'm also going to try to be more focused on reviewing my play, which is time consuming, but healthy.

Hand 1: Here's a pretty standard AK hand. The villain who 3-bet preflop was fairly aggro, and I would have just called preflop if it were heads up, hoping to flop an ace or king and be able to squeeze out extra bets on the big streets. However, with the two other players in the pot, I decided that it would be best to play it straight and cap it. Everything after that is standard value betting.

Preflop: Hero is MP with As, Kh.
1 fold, Hero raises, CO 3-bets, 1 fold, SB calls, BB calls, Hero caps, CO calls, SB calls, BB calls.

Flop: (16 SB) 9d, 2d, Ad (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, CO folds, SB calls, BB calls.

Turn: (9.50 BB) Qc (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB calls.

River: (12.50 BB) 7c (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds.

Results:
SB has Js Qd (one pair, queens).
Hero has As Kh (one pair, aces).

Hand 2: This is a non-standard play against a non-standard villain. He was only at the table for about 5 hands before this one, and he had been playing a strange aggro blind steal/blind defense game. When I paired my ace, I felt that he was most likely folding if I bet (unless he had a pair), but he would most likely bet anything if I checked to him. I should have check-raised the turn. There are enough draws that he could have to force him to call the turn check-raise, and then I don't know what happens on the river. Probably I bet, and he folds. I don't know if he would bluff again on the end.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Ad, Jh.
2 folds, Button raises, 1 fold, Hero 3-bets, Button calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) Th, 3s, 7d (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

Turn: (4.25 BB) As (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero calls.

River: (6.25 BB) 5c (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero calls.

Results:
Hero has Ad Jh (one pair, aces).
Button has 6d 9h (high card, ace).

Hand 3: This is villain's first hand at the table. I think the turn bet-fold with middle pair is easy and standard against an unknown.

Preflop: Hero is MP with Ah, 9h.
1 fold, MP raises, 3 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 9s, 3s, Qc (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB calls.

Turn: (3.25 BB) Ks (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets, BB raises, Hero folds.

Hand 4: It turns out I had the best hand on the turn. I'm pretty sure folding is correct anyway against two players.

Preflop: Hero is Button with 9d, Kd. UTG posts a blind of $1.
UTG (poster) checks, 1 fold, Hero raises, 1 fold, BB calls, UTG calls.

Flop: (6.50 SB) Th, 8s, 9c (3 players)
BB checks, UTG bets, Hero calls, BB calls.

Turn: (4.75 BB) 4h (3 players)
BB checks, UTG bets, Hero folds, BB calls.

River: (6.75 BB) Js (2 players)
BB checks, UTG bets, BB raises, UTG calls.

Results:
BB has Kh Qs (straight, king high).
UTG has 7d Ah (straight, jack high).

Hand 5: This was an unusual blind defense hand. When he checked the flop and I improved, I wasn't sure whether to bet or check-raise. I went with the check-raise option and it turned out to work well for me. I haven't got the slightest idea what he had. The most reasonable thing would be some hand with two clubs, so perhaps KT of clubs or something like that. I actually thought the ace killed me on the end.

Preflop: Hero is BB with Qh, 7h.
Button raises, 1 fold, Hero calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 2s, 9c, 6h (2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks.

Turn: (2.25 BB) Qc (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, BB raises, Button calls.

River: (6.25 BB) As (2 players)
BB bets, Button folds.

Hand 6: This was a total surprise to me. I had clicked check-fold on both the flop and turn. I don't know if I can call on the river because the pot is too small. BB's preflop raise was pretty terrible.

Preflop: Hero is CO with 8s, Ts.
1 fold, MP calls, Hero calls, 1 fold, SB completes, BB raises, MP calls, Hero calls, SB calls.

Flop: (8 SB) 5c, 3c, Kc (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero checks.

Turn: (4 BB) 4h (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero checks.

River: (4 BB) Tc (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, MP checks, Hero checks.

Results:
SB has 7s 4d (one pair, fours).
BB has 9h Qh (high card, king).
MP has 9s Ad (high card, ace).
Hero has 8s Ts (one pair, tens).

Hand 7: No choice but to value bet when in position. I guess he had already committed to showing down AK regardless of what happened, so it's his loss.

Preflop: Hero is UTG with Ts, 8s.
Hero raises, 1 fold, SB 3-bets, BB calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (9 SB) 3d, 4c, Tc (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB calls.

Turn: (6 BB) 2h (3 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets, SB calls, BB folds.

River: (8 BB) 6d (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets, SB calls.

Results:
SB has Kd Ac (high card, ace).
Hero has Ts 8s (one pair, tens).

Stats $2/4 (2/3/2007)

My first BUSTO of the challenge. I don't think it's likely to be the last, but I may be luckier in the future. And I may also play better. I think there were a lot of bad variance spots that really crushed me. I believe I play better than most of the players at this level and that I don't really believe $2/4 is my upper limit. However, I do know of areas of weakness (calling down in spots where I shouldn't and trying to win too many pots are two examples).

But as usual, here are some pictures with miscellaneous statistical information:

Day 44-10: -$87.50 (-22 BB at $2/4)

Level: -$200.00 in 690 table minutes (-100 BB at $2/4)
Overall: +$106.90 in 5659 table minutes

BUSTO! I was fairly sure it was going to happen. I just had that feeling. So it's going to be back down to $1/2 for a while. It's probably going to be good for me to do that. It's unfortunate that I don't have the time to really develop my game. Real life is too busy these days (interviews and finishing my thesis), so I'm slowly backsliding. I'm not in the mood to post hands right now, so I won't. But I will put together another stat page in the next day or two (hopefully... the Super Bowl is Sunday, which may get in the way).

Day 43-9: +$38.50 (+10 BB at $2/4)

Level: -$112.50 in 607 table minutes (-28 BB at $2/4)
Overall: +$194.40 in 5576 table minutes

I put my $2/4 bankroll on the line today and nearly doubled it. It was a short 75 hand session, but I don't have much to say about it. The game is easy if you flop the nuts and value bet it the whole way and win. It's also easy when you flop top pair and value bet it the whole way and win.
